Keel laid down, for the lead boat of the class, by Newport News Shipbuilding & Dry-dock Co., Newport News, VA on January 8, 1972; launched on April 6, 1974 and commissioned November 13, 1976 with Cdr John E. Christensen, Jr. in command.
