Soviet S class, Srednyaya class submarine
The S-class IX series was a Dutch-German design submitted to the Soviets based on the German Type Ia. The IX bis is a later on Soviet improved design. Ten units were built under the XVI series, S-38, S-45 to 48, S-58 to 62 those units were of all –welded construction using high tensile steel.
Specifications, Soviet S-class series IX bis/XVI:
Saddle-tank configuration, 4.60m riveted hull diameter with seven compartments. Battery capacity was increased in both series over the IX series and so was the fuel. The 100mm gun shield that characterized the IX series was deleted and the gun was probably mounted abaft the conning tower in the XVI series.

Construction
Three hulls were built under the IX series by Ordzhonikidze, Leningrad; launched in 1935-36, designated N-1 to N-3. Some 34more uniteswere launched from 1936 to 1946 under the IX bis series and 10 under XVI series. Those 44 or so hulls were constructed by different shipyards allover the Soviet Union.
Three submarines were transferred to China in 1954-55.
