M.I. Gadzhiyev, a WW-II submarine commander and a hero of the Soviet Union

Magomet Imadutninovich Gadzhiyev, (1907-1942), was a Soviet Navy submarine commander and hero of the Soviet Union. He fought and died during World War II.

Joined the navy in 1925 and graduated from the Frunze Military Academy in 1932. He was appointed to the submarine division of the Black Sea Fleet and was second in command of the AG class submarine A-2. He subsequently commanded the submarines M-9 and SCH-117.

In 1939 he studied at the Voroshilov Military Staff College and was assigned to the Northern Fleet on graduation. He became commander of the Northern fleet`s submarine brigade in 1940. His command sunk 10 German transports in 1942. On 13 June 1942 his boat, the K-class K-23 was sunk by German forces with all hands.
