British Royal Navy submarine, HMS Triad
A T-class submarine, group 1, built by Vickers Armstrong, Barrow.
In October 1940 she was sent from Malta to patrol off the coast of Libya before proceeding to Alexandria. By October 20 the submarine was overdue. It was first believed that Italian aircraft had bombed Triad off Calabria, but it is now thought Triad was sunk by the Italian submarine Enrico Toti in a surface gun action on October 15, 1940. If true, this is the only time that one submarine has been sunk by another with guns on the surface.
