About me and my stamp collection

My name is Gidi, which is short for Gideon-a Biblical hero, I was born in Israel in 1958 and ever since I have been living in Israel. Now days I am a retired officer, Commander, from the Israeli Navy, I was in service for 22 years. Since I am a mechanical (naval) engineer I spent most of those years in different duties relating to the Department of Ship Design & Engineering, within that department I was mainly involved with submarines and other underwater technologies.

My passion for stamps, inspired by my father, started as a young child, at the age of 6, when I started collecting every stamp I stumbled into, pilling them off envelopes and arranging them in albums according to topics such as sports, animals, flowers, birds, fishes, ships etc. Later on I became a member of the Israeli Philatelic Service receiving regularly all Israeli emissions and building a large and comprehensive collection of Israeli stamps, but after quite a few years I found that way of collecting stamps rater boring so I decided to switch back to my old and basic passion, collecting thematic stamps, this time concentrating in a major topic The Sea-ships, boats, fishes and sea mammals, crustaceans and mollusks, navigators and explorers, light-houses etc.

The next natural step was to combine my profession with my hobby, meaning focusing and diving into the world of submarines stamps collecting.

My current collection is an out come of three years of intensive effort, started in 1999, to try and put-together a comprehensive list of all submarine stamps issued out around the world and then ,once completing the list, collecting them all. Well, putting up the list turned out to be a pain stacking, time consuming job more then I imagine at first, most of it was done by searching catalogs, dealers and collectors using the Internet. As you will see I have mange, not badly, both putting up the list and chasing the items down.

As of 2003 I started enlarging my collection and spreading it into covers, cancellations, postal stationary and all other philatelic items.

The final step, and that idea popped up in to my head later on, was constructing this internet site, displaying my collection and trying to tell the story of the evolution of diving belles and submersibles into real submarines as reflected through stamps emissions issued out by various post authorities world wide.

One must be aware to the fact that  the attempt of writing the history of submarines under this constringe, naturally, dose not do justice to academic accuracy since not every historical event or development, technological brake through or historical mile stone was granted with a stamp or perpetuated on a souvenir sheet.
   
All I know is that I gave it the best effort I could and I can only hope that you’ll enjoy the outcome as I enjoyed the making of it.

אני ואוסף הבולים

חיבתי לבולים, אשר הושפעה מאבי, החלה כילד צעיר בגיל 6 עת נהגתי להסיר בולים ממעטפות אשר נקרו בדרכי ולסדרם באלבום עלפי נושאים- ספורט, בעלי חיים, פרחים, תחבורה וכו'- כמובן שאת המושג "איסוף טמתי" לא הכרתי אז. מאוחר יותר כנער הצטרפתי לשרות הבולאי והתחלתי לקבל באופן מסודר את בולי ישראל במשך מספר לא מועט של שנים, צורת איסוף זו די שעממה אותי ולכן הפסקתי את חברותי בשרות הבולאי ושבתי אל אהבתי הראשונה אל האיסוף הנושאי.  לאורך שנות שרותי בחיל הים האיסוף הנושאי נשמר "על אש קטנה" והוסט בעיקר לתחום הרחב "ים" אשר כלל כלי שייט מסוגים שונים (סירות מפרש, אניות ואניות מלחמה), טבע ימי- דגים, יונקים ימיים, אלמוגים וכונכיות והתפרש עד מגדלאורים מגלי ארצות ונווטים ימיים.

בשנת 1999 עת פרשתי מצה"ל מצאתי עצמי במשך מספר שנים מתגורר בפריס כאשר זמני בידי. פריס עיר רבת עינין ותוכן ובין שאר מעלותיה של העיר ניתן למנות את היותה צומת פילטלית חשובה. כאמור כאשר זמני בידי היתה זו העת לחדש את עיסוקי באוסף הבולים ומכיון שהגעתי למסקנה כי נושא "הים" רחב מידי כמעט כימים עצמם מה יותר טבעי היה מאשר לחבר את תחום עיסוקי והתמחותי המקצועית אל אהבתי לאיסוף הנושאי וכך הצטמצמתי והחלתי לטפח אוסף בנושא הצוללות.

האוסף הנוכחי הנו פרי עבודה מאומצת בת כ- 3 שנים אשר בבסיסה ניסיון ללמוד ולהרכיב רשימה של כלל הוצאות הבולים במדינות השונות העוסקים בתחום הצוללות, הרכבת הרשימה היתה מתוך עיון ממושך בקטלוגים ופעילות די ענפה של שאילתות וסריקת אתרי אינטרנט. בהמשך, לאחר הרכבת הרשימה, החל שלב האיסוף הסיזיפי אשר כלל ביקור קבוע בירידי בולאות, כתות רגליים בין סוחרי הבולים הרבים שבעיר, רכישה באמצעות התכתבות באינטרנט עם אספנים אחרים וקניה דרך אתרי בולאות ושרותי דואר שונים וכמובן אתר e-bay.

כיום לאחר התמקדות של כעשור בנושא "הצוללות" ברשותי אוסף רחב מאוד אשר כולל, בנוסף לבולים וגליונות מזכרת, מעטפות יום ראשון, חותמות דואר שונות וארועים היסטוריים הקשורים בצוללות כמוכן כמות לא מבוטלת של מעטפות הנוגעות לתחום ומציינות תחילת בניה, מועד השקה וסיום שרות. בנוסף  לצוללות, שמטבען הנן כלי לחימה בציי העולם, כולל האוסף גם צוללות מחקר וכלי שייט תת מימיים בלתי מאוישים וכן כלי טייס לגילוי ותקיפת צוללות. לא התאפקתי  ואיך אפשר בלי הצוללת הידועה מכולן ה"נאוטילוס" של קפיטן נמו מ"עשרים אלף מייל מתחת לפני הים" מאת ז'ול וורן ו"הצוללת הצהובה" של "החיפושיות".

שלב נוסף עליו אני שוקד כיום הנו הצגת האוסף באינטרנט. האתר והאוסף מוקדשים לזכרו של אבי יעקב רענן שהיה מפקדה של הצוללת אח"י דקר. הרעיון בהקמת האתר הנו ניסיון לספר באמצעות בולים ושאר דברי דואר על התפתחותן ההיסטורית של הצוללות ולכן בבסיסו של האתר מחקר היסטורי והחזון הינו שבסופו לכל בול יהיה קישור לאותה פיסת היסטוריה או קובץ נתונים טכניים המשוייך לצוללת המתוארת בבול מסוים.
